I’m pretty sure implantable GPS is a technology whose time has come.   Today I was running late and forgot the GPS watch.  Also my phone.  So of course,  I ended up taking a random route on unmapped trails and having no idea how far I’d gone.  I’m thinking that what I want is an implantable GPS receiver/transmitter combo chip..so that I can not only always record my miles and route  automatically, but if I break my ankle or a tree falls on me or I’m run over by a mountain biker, someone can track me and find me before I’m eaten by the wolves of the Wissahickon.  OK, maybe there are no wolves.  Let’s say the carnivorous chipmunks of the Wissahickon.  Really, I have way too many things to do to get ready for a run.  It requires too much organization.  I have to charge the GPS watch the night before, then remember to put it on, (and turn it on), charge my ipod and sync the latest podcasts,  fill my water bottles, find and charge my emergency phone  and  find a pack of Gu.  And take my Vitamin I.  That’s after I find and put on the right shoes.  Anyway, today’s run, according to my best guess with MapMyRun (which doesn’t have all the trails in it) is 10.3 miles.  So, this is  the first time I’ve done 10 miles in the New Balance Minimus.  Tomorrow we’ll see if my Achilles tendons are mad at me.  The other highlight of my run was outrunning some inexperienced trail bikers.  They kept passing me on downhills, then getting stuck on the uphills, then passing me again.  They did this three times before I lost them by fording a creek.

No pictures today..still haven’t fixed the screen on my ipod Touch and I don’t want to run with my iPhone.  I think the GPS implant should come with a built in digital camera. Now I’m wondering where to put it.  I guess right in the center of my forehead would be weird.

I now have New Balance trail Minimus shoes, and have been wearing them for a week or so, on and off, sort of alternating with my Saucony Foot Coffins (SFC’s) which by the way, I actually still like a lot.  The Mizunos are now my weekend walkaround shoes and the vehicle through which I attach my custom orthotics to my feet when I feel the need to wear the orthotics.   I’m not sure if the Minimi  are helping or hurting…I’ve only worn them for a maximum of 5 miles at a time.  They’re very comfortable, and I have no soreness in the calves or feet, but they’ve made me aware that I have such a thing as an Achilles tendon, which I’d never really noticed before.  No soreness, just awareness.  It feels odd running in them.  I wonder what my gait looks like.  I think I’m not crazy about the so-called ‘toe spring’, that is, the way the toes curve up off the ground sort of like modified elf shoes.  Is it supposed to make me spring forward better?  Since my toes don’t bend up toward the sky on their own, it seems that shoes that try to impose that shape on my foot are not being true to the minimalist goal.  Just sayin’.
